Biography: Japanese jazz guitarist Hideaki Tokunaga was born in Osaka, Japan on February 27, 1961. After honing his skills in his home country, Tokunaga moved to the United States, first New York and then California, and studied music on a Charles Mingus Scholarship at the California Institute of Arts. He went on to win many awards for his playing, including scholarship awards and -- in 1995 -- the Down Beat Magazine Student Music Award. In addition to his education and teaching, he has toured Japan and Brazil as well as both coasts of the United States. His recordings, in particular his best-selling Vocalist series, were well-received, with the third installment of the aforementioned title breaking the top ten in the charts in Japan. ~ Chris True, All Music Guide
