Biography: T.K. Webb belongs to that small but growing tribe of young artists who channel sorely missed genre pioneers so effectively and with such unswerving solidarity it's almost spooky. Like Joss Stone, Jonny Lang, and Kieran McGee, Webb, who was born Thomas Kelly Webb in 1977 in rural Missouri, doesn't have much use for what sounds current. Though he lives in Brooklyn and recorded his 2005 full-length album -- KCK, short for Kansas City, KS -- there, the Delta blues are Webb's calling card, and he sings, stomps, and bats them out so convincingly a listener half-suspects he sat on Robert Johnson's grave as he learned to play guitar. Chances are he didn't, but stories circulating about Webb's early years are almost as compelling. By age nine, Webb, who first picked up a guitar several years earlier, reportedly mastered the entire Led Zeppelin catalog. By 13, he was playing around the Kansas City shantytowns that would later infect his songwriting alongside rock bands whose members were twice his age. As he hit his mid-teens, Webb inherited a stack of Delta blues records that irrevocably altered his thinking about what worthwhile music was made of. The haunting tambourine of New Orleans gospel-blues legend Sister Gertrude Morgan surfaces in almost every Webb song; so does the dusty, knowing dourness of perennially down-on-their-luck bluesmen like Leadbelly, Blind Willie Johnson, and Muddy Waters. Song titles further this sensibility: "Lonely Wine," "Hard Luck Case," and "Camden County Blues" all surface on KCK.
